Food Stamp Challenge: Notes From Stella

We are almost done with our first week of our Food Stamp Challenge and I asked my daughter if she would blog once per week and share her experience, here is what she had to say.

Painted Face

This month my mom and I are taking the food stamp challenge. Now I know how this works. Your probably wondering where is she going with this? Well I’ll tell you where, to the worst subject ever possible…        HUNGER!!!!!!   Yah that’s right hunger the worst thing known to man. Now I knew this wasn’t gonna be easy but I never thought it would be this hard. When I get home I’m so hungry because I can’t have a snack after school.

The food stamps are terrible I feel so bad for any one who has to live on them. Do you want to know?  ok I’ll tell you because every night I have the same thing for dinner burrito’s. It get’s a little annoying after a while.
Now let me tell you about lunch. My mom finally got me to do school lunch every other week which I am not looking forward to. School lunches are terrible, but I guess I’ll give this school a try just in case.
I guess I’ll give this food stamp thing a try but my stomach is still gonna take it’s lunch money because it’s dying of hunger.

This is what I’ve been waiting for – Stella:)) “and a little child shall lead them”. These are the Voices we need to hear from, if we are going to empower a compassionate system. Thank you Stella for sharing your thoughts and experience:)

Stella did a wonderful job of getting right to the heart of the problem with our rich and resourceful country. That we would let people go HUNGRY is unconscionable. Please tell Stella I appreciate what a good job she did on this blog!!

Great Job Stella, so very expressive and honest! I am wondering if you or Stella’s teachers have noticed a difference in her energy and concentration, her sleep patterns, mood, as I suspect over time they are all affected. Yours too! Pamela, I am so impressed with your and Stella’s willingness to give this a try so we can all experience the food stamp challenge through the two of you. You are so much more resourceful than most in general (and certainly ME) and I suspect even more so than those on food stamps, so I think your and Stella’s meals are more nutritious than most on stamps- and yet still not enough! It bothers me that we send billions of dollars in aid oversees to feed their hungry and yet our own children are going hungry, this system is so broken!

Thanks for telling us how it really is Stella. I admire your willingness to take on this challenge. I have asked Stella and Pamela to speak at the Feeding Floyd County Event on March 15 (contact plenty@swva.net for more info). we are inviting everyone to try the food stamp challenge from March 8-15.

I will be writing about this in a few days. Yes, we have seen a difference. And to make matters worse they just cut funding to the program!
